It's usually called "good cop, bad cop" and apparently it actually is done sometimes.

Its called "Good Cop, Bad Cop" and its not a game. It is a natural phenomenon. Your parents probably did it. In reality one of the cops gets usually just gets fed up with the suspect lying and/or being a jerk and lets their emotions take over. The other one keeps their cool and looks like the "good cop" because they are being professional. In my experience the "bad cop" didn't even know that they were the "bad one" until the other one stepped in and got results (which usually pissed us off more because it looked intentional!)

It can happen in either order (starting with the professional doing their job and the emotional one getting frustrated and acting out, or with the emotional one getting frustrated and acting out and the professional one stepping in to diffuse the situation)

The media (big surprise) likes to play it up when it comes to cops with the whole, "I can't control my partner, who knows what he may do" crap.

I have never heard of a game like this.

i live in a very VERY CORRUPT county
Unforteunatly, this concept is so VERY true!
You really do have "one good apple" in the bunch, but even though they want to do the right thing by the person they assume is innocent, they are outweighed, outnumbered by the "bad" one.

Its an awful horrible but very real game. SAD!
