can I add a dvd movie player to my pc as a slave to the primary harddrive?

I am using a pc with windows xp home and I would like to add a movie player to my pc. The pc has a primary and a secondary plug in slots, master and slave. I am using AII accelerator. The secondary slot contains a cd reader(master) and a cd/rw(slave) which works. The primary has a 40 pin ribbon w/ 2 long connectors, one for the HDD the other for another device. The back of the dvd movie player has a jumper for slave, master and cable control. The last time I tried to connect this long ago I could not get the HDD to get the dvd movie player to work as a slave. I have used up all the ribbon ports and only have the HDD one left. I should install the software first, but is there something I am not doing like going into BIOS or like that to configure this drive? The back of the dvd player says these words and pins in this order>digital audio,analog audio,cable select, slave, master, 40 pin ied interface, dc input. Could I try the cable select? Thanks Brett

the 40 pin ribbon has 2 ends, connect the connector at the end of the ribbon to the DVD drive, and set its jumper to slave, and connect the other connector to your HDD and set its jumper to Master.
it is preferable that you give up one of your CDrom drives, and connect the DVD drive in its palce, because connecting a DVD drive to the same IDE bus with a HDD will slow down the HDD transfer rate. and the DVD drive can read also CDs, so why keep 2 CD drives ?

It should work without a problem.

Make sure the primary hard drive setting is correct; if it's jumper is set to cable select or single, then move it to master. The DVD should be set to slave. (Don't use the cable select unless you know they are in the right order. You don't want the HD being a slave to the DVD.)

The ribbon cable plugs into all devices with the red wire (pin 1) closest to the power connector. This is true for ALL IDE connections (hard drives, CDs, DVDs, etc).

Once connected, make sure your BIOS is set to auto-detect the primary slave device. If it's set to NONE, then the computer won't see it.

Switch the jumper on the back of the HD to master and hook up the dvd player to the same cable as a slave. go into the bios on the restart and make sure your IDE options are all set to auto detect. should work out just fine.

try installing the dvd drive to the secondary cable as master, and connect the cd rom drive as a slave to the hard disk

You could definitely try cable select. the first part (nearest to the CPU) is always the master and the further part would be the slave.

I would suggest that you remove the CD reader (it is no longer required) and replace it with the DVD player.
