I do not think you can do anything about it but to wait. Apple holds 80% of the music download industry and this is the holiday season. They are drowning due to very heavy internet traffic and their servers are maxed out.
All I can suggest is to wait and try again later. If you were lucky to connect to the Apple server, you are back in business.

check itunes internet connection settings and make sure they're correct
add itunes entry to your firewall's trusted list
if you have a router with NAT you may need to forward the port itunes uses to your computer.
or
uninstall then reinstall itunes

the site is jam-packed because every one is using their Christmas presents at the same time, give it a few weeks and it will go back to normal, the day after Christmas, apple almost had to shut down because of all the traffic

in 'internet properties' (control panel), add itunes to your trusted sites, make sure you get the correct URL.
