Marriage used in the legal sense of the word: man + woman under state law to provide a union, is a Construct of our society, not all societies have this.
If you look at it from a purely anaylitical view: the reason for it doesn't even make sense nowadays, however: many people tend to believe that getting a piece of paper to say they are a union actually makes their love solidify or ensures something or maybe just want to prove their love for each other.
In our society today it seems as if some people get married and take advantage or assume their spouse is taking advantage or use it to control in some fashion....
I really could go on and on, I am not bitter, been married twice, and have learned a tremendous amount along the way.
I am not advising you not to consider this if you truly love and trust another human being; i would only say: really know eachother first...so many things go left unasked before people walk down that aisle.
Best of Wishes to You.

Marriage is an institution. It has evolved over centuries.
Marriage is a social contract between two individuals that unites their lives legally, economically and emotionally.
Being married also gives legitmacy to sexual relations within the marriage.
Marriage is not only sex. Only people who do not marry are the one who only think of sex; either they want it every time and nothing else or the people who do not want it ever in their life.
Life becomes worth living when you marry and live for someone and with someone.
Society has certain norms which are supposed to be adhered to by men and women when they marry.
The sacrament of marriage gives the couple the grace to grow into a union of heart and soul, to provide stability for themselves and their children.
Children are the fruit and bond of a marriage.
Marriage is a pot in which love grows to its full height.
Just think for awhile if there was nothing like marriage, what would happen?
Men would not be responsible for getting women pregnant. Women would be sole responsible for bringing up the children.
Either of the person would have choice to walk out at any time even in the middle of the night with out any explaination.
We will have infinite numbers of single parents and the women would out number men.
And look at the problems single parents are facing today in the world. There can be few single parents who can afford, but if you ask them they too crave for companionship.
There would be more children on the street than in homes and schools.
Money would be the sole criteria to decide who lives with whom.
There would be nothing called love and affection.
There would be no reason for men to take responsibilities of family.
Society would be in chaos.
The question is just like asking:
Why do I have to drive in lanes?
Why do I have to wear clothes?
Why do we have law and order?
Why do we have Governments?
Why do we build houses?
We can argue that marriage is not compulsory just like it is not compulsory to drive, wear clothes in your house, have any law and order under your jurisdiction, have no governing of your property and yourself, you can stay on streets, etc.
Apart from giving legal rights in the society marriage helps to build a bond between two individuals.
Humans are too smart to run away from the responsibilites, unlike animals.
In animals every male and female has distributed responsibilities of taking care of young ones till they are independent to survive and that's why they do not have any thing like marriage rituals.
The link below would be worth reading if you really want to know about marriage.

If we think of abolishing marriage human beings existence will be at stake.
It won't take more then couple of centuries for Human beings to be listed as rare species on this earth.
Think about it "why do we have code of conduct on yahoo community?" Think what all people would be writing to you!!!

It's like a gift you give someone. It says I trust you. I believe in you. I love you. It means you have someone to share with, laugh with, cry with, grow old with. If you've made the right choice, the gift comes back to you. It's the ultimate expression of true love. It's rare to find and so worth holding onto.
