That's a tough one. I can't narrow it down to one, so I'll give you five of the best.
1. Billy Wilder: Some Like it Hot, The Apartment
2. Clint Eastwood: Mystic River, Bird
3. Frank Capra:It's a Wonderful Life and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
4. Martin Scorsese: Raging Bull and Mean Streets
5. Steven Spielberg: Shindler's List and The Color Purple
But I could easily list 5 more directors. I think a great director can leave a lifelong impression on a person, and I know each of these directors has.

Michel Gondry
Although Science of Sleep was amazing, still Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was in my opinion, a better film.
I'm looking forward to seeing my Zach Braff produced films (Garden State being his debut).

edward burns. he's an actor but he also directed "Sidewalks of New York." it's a bittersweet poignant love story... er, rather, it's an amalgam of interlocking love stories within a single flowing plot. it shows how all people are connected to each other, and that we all have our own flaws and shortcomings in matters of love. it doesn't matter if you're successful or struggling, married or single, a romantic or a cynic... it's so real it will make you stop and think, "that's my life, right there..."
