Benny Hill is a bit of a sexist embarrasment I think so don't judge British humour by his standards.
Shows to look out for that capture Brit humour are:
Fawlty Towers
Little Britain
The Young Ones
Abs Fab
Royle Family
Gimme Gimme
Vicar of Dibley
Only Fools and Horses

On NYE I was bored and switched to Royalty to see what they were asking. One question was, referring to prince Charles, Do you think with those ears, Charles could here a mouse fart from five rooms away? I thought that was hilarious . English humor is really funny if you understand how not funny the English are. They have a very dry sense of humor. A show called Absolutely Fabulous, or AB Fab was a favorite.
