Not all businesses do this, but i did it on many occassions as i would like to see some of my profits help the needy. Not all donations are tax deductable, so be sure you check with your accountant before donating.
I still do this as an ordinary working guy as it is claimed back at tax time and its nice to receive a nice tax return.

you do not have to donate anything. Its an image thing to show that they are doing some good with their profits. In actual fact you save taxes by donating.

you should really have the advice of a professional business tax person to determine how much.
Donations to local causes can build good will and serve as a form of positive advertising.
And if for no other reason, giving to worthy causes is a morally good thing to do.
