I live in a small town, and its not like I can ask a friend or a neighbor if they know a good divorce attorney. Plus he thinks that I'm just threatening and will not follow through with it. I so much want to have the upper hand in this situation. I have waited and waisted too many years---please help. Thank you for your help with this matter.

If you live near a larger town you can usually find a legal referral service that will give you several names of divorce attorneys.

Otherwise go to any attorney you trust or to anyone who has legal contacts who might be able to suggest someone. You might also be able to do research on the internet.

Most attorneys will try to first explore the possibility of preserving your marriage by working through the problems. Any consultation should be made in confidence.

There is usually no fee for a first consultation.

The best way to find a good attorney is to call to the State Bar of your state and ask them to recommend you one. The better way, however, is to go to the court building where the divorce will be held and ask there to recommend you one! The same lawyers are working there all the time, and their reputation is known to all in that court, especially the judges. It is always good to have a lawyer who is already known to judges there because he holds all his cases there all the time.
Find out which court will be holding your case, then go there and ask which lawyer is a good one.
