I think the term may have originated or certainly been promoted by Bill O'Reilly. It is a reference to the followers of Jim Jones, who died from drinking poisoned Kool-Aid.

A blind follower of any particular political philosophy is compared to the blind (and dead) followers of Jim Jones.

That religious cult years ago who all drank poisoned Kool-Aid at the direction of their psychotic leader because they thought he was the Christ. Usually it's a reference to someone who seems to be blindly following their "leader". Some hard-core right-wing conservatives often invite their loony left-wing counterparts to "have some more Kool-Aid" when they express rediculous opinions or make outlandish statements.
A perfect example is those folks who are convinced the Bush administration brought the Twin Towers down on 9-11 as a political ploy to gain popularity in the polls. Many would for instance invite them to have another pitcher of Kool-Aid.

I would also like to add that although people did drink kool-aid and kill themselves due to a crazy cult,
that there has also been a surge in interest for the old giant kool-aid man that was the red pitcher full of kool-aid.

Something about this giant figure breaking down walls and yelling "OHH YEAH" somehow kept in the minds and hearts of people, and now there are many a t-shirt out there spoofing it.

Some people are saying that it is the Jim Jones affair in Giana. He had his followers drink a grape flavored drink laced with cyanide. It was found later that the children were forced to drink it and many of the adults were injected with cyanide or shot. I think this is another way of the political no-nothings to crap on the US government. Trying to make a comparison to this horrible tragedy and President Bush's cabinet. Really nothing has to be said about these people's morals, their hateful nature says it all.

It's the descriptive term for those among us who choose to believe our Simian Boy King and the rhetoric Karl Rove proliferates without question and total loyalty.
