Events occuring in the day can cause a nightmare when you go to sleep. If you think a lot about something bad or harmful you will likely get one.
It's the images rushing through your mind that the brain makes up and puts all together in its own way. And haha answerer #1 funny answer

Nightmares are dreams gone bad, basically. Dreams are your subconscious mind reflecting on your life, with much randomness mixed in. Many things can cause a nightmare, suck as a bad day, or a traumatizing event. Usually they are harmless, unless reoccurring,

Unresolved turmoil in ones life could cause nightmares, also some prescribed medications can cause the same.

Eating too much food late at night causes them for me. Just last evening, I gorged out of the refrigerator then during the night dreamed that I was still married to my ex wife.

i think sometimes nightmares can be a subliminal message to what is really going on in your life.

look deep down into your dream... what is it really about?
try to figure out the message.

nightmares often happed when you think of bad things that happens to you or might happen to you. .
if you wanna prevent nightmares from happening,, , , just think of happy thoughts before going to sleep. . . .
