One of my classmates keeps their doctor's coat sparkling white by soaking it in the washer in bleach for an hour. How much bleach would be safe to use without risking ruining the coat? Any other tips would be appreciated greatly!

How dirty could it be...haha - think wearing it for three years and working in it. Almost everyone's looks kind of dingy now except my classmates

Usually, oversoaking in bleach will have a yellowing effect. If you choose to soak it in bleach, less is better- and use cold water. It's natural to want to use bleach and hot water, but I would suggest cold to avoid the yellowing that it can cause.

Try a quarter cup to start- how dirty could the coat be? :)

Oh the oxyclean idea is good too.

I use the Oxy powder and other similar products for regular whitening and I use Clorox periodically. Bleach can cause yellowing if overused and can also cause the fibers in the clothes to weaken. And the response about cold water is very good. I almost always wash in cold. You could also try non chlorine bleach. Most washers have a fill cup for bleach and they are not very big. The maximum fill line on mine is only about 1/4 cup. You might call a local dry cleaner business and see if they have any suggestions as well. Good Luck!

If you have already dried the shirt in a dryer then the stain may be set. There is a bar soap called Naptha. It is old and reliable. I spray the stained spot, scrub it with Naptha soap and wash in cold water. If there is still a stain I repeat the process and don't dry until the stain is gone.

Bleach works for some fabrics 1/2 a cup in a washing machine is what I use. For other stains you can use soda water or club soda on them. There is also baking soda to add to your washing machine.
