Per HurricaneMercedes' comment, an actual "romance novel" (found in the romance section from a romance publisher) is going to have a happy ending. That doesn't mean that you can't *start* it with the heroine getting over a heartbreaking romance.

Of course, there are also plenty of novels--classics even--with heartbreaking love stories. They're usually found in the Fiction section. Danielle Steele, in particular, used to have her books start with a heartbreaking love story, and then heal her heroine with a happier new love :-)

Don't feel you have to use other people's real stories--use your imagination! What do YOU imagine would be the most heartbreaking thing that could happen in a love story? Then write it.

You should read any book that catches your interest regardless of the genre. I'm sure you have read fantasy and sci-fi novels with elements of romance and/or sex; how did you react to that? If you didn't like it, then you should avoid Harlequin romance novels. If you like a little romance, well, lots of books include a little romance, from "Bridget Jones' Diary" to "Wuthering Heights" to plenty of historical nonfiction books. Scan the best-sellers list, your local library's picks, or just browse a bookstore. Read the backs. It does everyone good to branch out.

This is asking too much of me, to go to that place for you, a stranger, just so you can write a book. Do you not have your own story to tell? If not, would you be able to tell such a story with the truth it would require? How can you authentically write of deep heartbreak without truly knowing it yourself? For me, it is best not to revisit such devastating sadness. I can tell you it doesn't kill you, oddly enough.

Just promise us there will be no "torn bodices" or "milky white thighs," and no Fabio on the cover!
