When they don't ask for it by waking you up.

Some kids are ok at 3 months, ours took 6 or 7 months...each kid is different.

EDIT:

Yeah, we used to do the same thing as Marina suggests, once they get a little older (4 months may be a little young yet), you can mix that rice cereal in with the bottles. Some people say that might choke them. I don't know, if they are old enough, it should be ok. Worked for us anyways! We had to cut a little "X" in the tip of the bottle nipple though, because the cereal won't fit through the little hole.

We have 4.5 months old that wakes up at night every 2-3 hours to feed. Giving him rice cereal before the bedtime didn't help - he was still waking up, but in addition showed signs of constipation. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this pattern changes sooner than later.

When he stops waking up and is able to sleep through the night. Also, feeding him/her a couple of tablespoons of pablum might help keep his/her little tummy fuller longer. However, if you haven't tried this yet, be aware that sometimes it can cause constipation.

When he stops waking up in the middle of the night crying for it. His body will make the determination...not you.

Some babies go longer than others so it all depend on your child's needs.
Try feeding your baby something before your baby before you put him/her to bed. Or if you put 1TBSP of cereal in your babies bedtime bottle that usually helps too.
