The ammonia odour (NH3) comes from the bacterial breakdown of urea(NH2-CO-NH2) ,the latter being a normal excretory constituent of urine.

If the smell is strong there are two possibilities

(1) Your urine is very concentrated because you do not drink ENOUGH water daily and so the urea concentration is high. In that case the solution is simple and verifiable by yourself almost immediately. The day you drink say 3 litres of water the odour will decrease & the day you don't drink enough the odour will be strong. Remember that if you are losing a lot of water by sweating you may need to drink more than 3 litres.

(2)The urea which is broken down to ammonia is usually from the urine which has been trapped in the pubic hairs or around the vagina after you have urinated and wiped yourself.
You need to wash with water (not just wipe) as often, after urinating ,as possible.
You may add an antiseptic like betadine etc. in the water once a day if you wish.
Another possibility is to try shaving or trimming the pubic hairs as this will reduce the amount of urine trapped in the hairs after urinating.
Also when you wipe dry, try doing it from front to back from behind as this movement will not bring the droplets of urine to the pubic hairs.

I am certain you have all the suggestions required. GOOD LUCK.

you could try better hygene...but somehow I don't think that's the issue. Try taking a good probiotic (get it from a health food store - have someone who works there recommend a good one) and eating yogurt EVERY DAY - the kind with live and active cultures. It may be a bacterial thing you've got going on. You would also benefit from enzymes...talk to the healthfood store person about getting a good all inclusive enzyme suppliment too.

what it sounds like you've got is some thing called bacterial vaginosis (not quite sure how you spell it) you'll need to see someone who specialises in that area to prescribe you some antibiotics. bacterial vaginosis is something you will have for the rest of your life but you can stop it from smelling by using a cream you can buy in boots or super drug called aqueous cream. if you use this as a shower gel instead of soap etc the smell won't come back and know one will ever know you had that problem!! trust me, its all true!! good luck hun!!xx

A mild solution of warm water and baking soda, say a half teaspoon of soda to 2 litres (half a gallon) of water. Use that to wash your personal section.
Talk to your pharmacist (chemist). They are often more help than a dr.
