this is the follow up to my first question. i got many answers but many of them seemed to miss the mark . Some people argued that one of the major reasons for this antagonistic attitude toward rap was it's violence, but that dosen't compute. This is the same society in which the Sopranos (a show about italian Drug-dealers and pimps) is a top rated series and in which VIOLENT movies like Saw and Hostel are box office hits. You can't tell me this is an anti-violent culture. Second, these fans seem to judge rap by what is in the mainstream but the rock/metal purists are the very first to lead you to some lesser known underground bands that they hold as their favorite. Yet when it comes to rap everything becomes about what is on the radio. Finally, people don't seem to realize that melody does not define music. Melody is only one of the three theoretical aspects of music. Rhythm is another. Consequently those that say rap is not music are technically incorrect...it is indeed music.

No, definitely not, and it's not that rap isn't music per se it's just not music to most of our ears. You see what defines music is our personal preference, not some silly official definition. Though I should mention that my uncle happens to like both kinds of music so it's definitely not even all of us who don't like rap.

PROBABLY because some rock, metal, etc fans only get to listen to those poorly written rap songs that are very popular and out there. They just can't help it since these songs are everywhere. I listen to rock music and I don't hate rap music. I just don't listen to it. I'm sure that rap music has meaning. By personal experience there are some rap fans out there hating on rock, metal, etc music for the same reasons... Notice how the bands you've mentioned are popular?

They have no evidence to support what they say. If they say it's because the violence they are all liars because rock music is just a violent than rap music. If you say you don't like rap have a reason, or you just sound like an idiot or a bigot.

For example, I don't like most modern rap because it's mostly about materialistic things, sex, and has a lot of negative conotations. I listen to alternative music or typical chick music that deals with feelings and different life/political issues.

I like Eminem because most of his songs deal with what he's been through or issues he supports. He has a sense of humor, yet he's a serious person. I like that. I don't like P. Diddy because he's only out to make crappy party music with no substance. See people, I have a reason why I like certain things.

its just that rap is not music.its some talentless criminal talking about himself with some computer generated or prerecorded track playing. the rapper cannot sing, so he talks. talking is not singing and therefore not music.furthermore, the subject matter is mostly one dimensional drivel.its either about crime, or the rapper's superiority over other rappers.
the reason metal/rock fans resent rap is because metal music requires a very high degree of technical proficiency on the instruments.this comes from a lifetime dedication to mastering an instrument, hard work, practise, thought.
so, for some crack dealer to walk into a studio, loop 15 seconds of a james brown song, start talking about guns and bitches and then make millions of dollars for it- this pisses off the actual musicians.

Who would be jealous of a bunch of idiots standing on stage making noise that no one even understands in the first place unless you read the words? It doesn't make sense and it is so unnecessary that it's not even funny. The only people who benifit from the so-called music are the gangsters and wanna be gangsters who sing it for the most part. There are a couple of rappers who aren't like that, but it has a lot worse reputation than any mafia show ever had. Personally, I say to each his own. Like it? Listen to it. Just don't bring it to my house to listen to.

I don't like rap. That's all, I really don't give a crap about the rhythm, it sounds terrible. So call it music, if you want, but I think rap is actually trying to kill music.

Didn't everyone say that Rock wasn't really music when it first came out. Now all of a sudden rock is stuck up LOL ! To a classical musician your music isn't music at all...just noise.

ahhh, musical talent! 'chain hang low' is borrowed from a children's song, and there's another current hit whose "music" is based on 'whistle while you work'. great on the level of subliminally making it work. i'm a 53 year old dj.
i play this music. is 'sampling "music" when
you don't have to write a tune???
just borrow one and add hand clapping and chnk-ka-chnk? brilliant.... beats THINKING! or CREATING!

as a dj, i play this. ok, so there's violence throu-
ghout the media. is "music" the sound of machine guns? is "music" 'n....' this, 'n...' that u mo-fo ho. is sexually explicit (and you know i mean freakin' X-rated verbal porn) "music"?
violence & sex sell, but at least parents can keep their children's exposure to the visual media to a minimum, but " music"...clean it up and air it! lovely. can you fill in the blank? " lick my neck, my back, lick my p (shh) and my cr(shh).....that's pretty hard for a nine year old
to figure out, isn't it???? uh huh!

Successful rap music??Yeah right.
Nothing to be proud of with rap or hip hop..the only people who really even bother with that garbage are teens.
Rock is flat out superior and appeals to a much wider base of people.
