Is it necessary to pay for a meal or entertainment if your friend is visiting YOUR country?

I have friends all over the world and they come to HK quite frequently, some of them are real thick friends some are ok. Is it necessary to pay for them all the time? Is it considered mean & disgusting if they pay when they're in MY hometown?

no! some people are users! so beware on who you spend your money on.
