Not necessarily. Some lawyers, like defense attorneys, make it a career to defend a person from criminal charges. Remember we are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around. A good attorney can save your life, your reputation and integrity from getting smeared by someone else. John Edwards is a good example of a decent attorney. He himself fought against the tobacco industry. They had a dozen attorneys to defend their theory that tobacco doesn't cause cancer. His client, a widow, ended up getting a settlement of $25 million. She had previously lost her husband, and because of her debts, lost everything she owned. In that case and many more like them, give attorneys a break. They aren't as bad as some people think.

I'm a lawyer and I love lawyer jokes.
Your question is a pretty funny joke, but it would be funnier to ask:

Is it true that Everybody Hates a Lawyer, and when they need one, then they REALLY HATE A LAWYER?!!

My two favorite lawyer jokes are:

1) Do you know why New Jersey has the greatest number of toxic waste dumps and Washington D.C. has the greatest number of lawyers in the country?

Because Jersey had first pick!

2) What's the difference between a hooker and a lawyer?

A hooker stops screwing you when you're dead!

Lawyers have one of the worst jobs, Unless they win everything you want then they are hated. It seems no matter what a lawyer can not fully win. I happen to like my attorney but I can't stand my ex-attorney but it has nothing to do with the win win situation it has to do with the guy being a pompous jerk and he likes to freely call people names. He is also a obnoxious. Two traits I can't stand and personally I wouldn't like him if I had met him on a street and didn't know his profession.

I've never had a reason to *hate* a lawyer. But then again, I've never needed a lawyer.

Just the general profession, not the individuals.

Too many are ambulance chasers. They are the ones who have caused the law suit craze.
Lawyers have made everything so complicated that one needs a lawyer for everything.

well, you know what they say... what do you call a 100 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? a good start!... lawyers aren't bad as a whole, it is just those select few that give them all the bad name.

No. Why would they have reason. Everybody hates a lawyer after they've had to deal with one, AND pay him.

Hate is a strong word, I am not happy with what they charge if I need one or not. If teachers charged that much everyone would home school and teaching in my opinion is the most important job their is.
