In order to create an objective top ten list (not just top goal scorers of the past 20 years!) I would definitely want to include at least one player from before WW2 like Howie Morenz. I wouldn't want to neglect goalies-Roy and Dryden come to mind. Lemieux, Gretzky, Lafluer, Rocket and Beliveau are no-brainers. I do confess to being Habs-centric though.

Dionne would be on the list, it's not his fault he played in a hockey backwater. Ted Lindsey with four cups with the Red Wings and Doug Harvey (we can't neglect defensive defense-men) would both be on my list-they excelled before the league became so diluted. So the problem is I'm running out of room, but Yzerman would be on my top 20 list

Excellent question. Probably not. I mean, off the top of my head you'd have to say: Orr, Gretzky, Mario, Morenz, Rocket Richard, Lafleur, Beliveau, Hall, Plante, Hasek and Gordie Howe...and I have not even mentioned Bobby Hull yet.

Yzerman was a great player but was he an icon outside of Detroit? Was he ever considered the absolute best player in the NHL? Close but no cigar. If the Waymer and Mario were not around, probably Stevie Y would be considered #1...but even Stevie Y would agree he's not as good as his idol #19 Bryan Trottier.

marvelous question. in all probability not. I mean, off the right of my head you will might desire to declare: Orr, Gretzky, Mario, Morenz, Rocket Richard, Lafleur, Beliveau, corridor, Plante, Hasek and Gordie Howe...and that i've got in no way even stated Bobby Hull yet. Yzerman became an incredible participant yet became he an icon outdoors of Detroit? became he ever seen the very superb participant interior the NHL? close yet no cigar. If the Waymer and Mario weren't around, in all probability Stevie Y may well be seen #a million...yet even Stevie Y might agree he's inferior to his idol #19 Bryan Trottier.

I don't know if he's in the top 10 considering the company he's in since the NHL is almost a hundred years old now. You got players like Cyclone Taylor, Gordie Howe, Rocket Richard, Tim Horton, Johnny Bower, Jean Beliveau, Ted Lindsay, etc, etc...But even to be in the top 50 of that list is extremely impressive.

Steve Yzerman is my most favorite player ever but not top ten. Here are ten guys ahead of him:

Eddie Shore, Doug Harvey, Mike Bossy, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Patrick Roy, Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Maurice Richard and Jean Beliveau.

There are some more but I would say he is near the top 20.

Top Ten of what? Top Ten in talent? While he has very impressive stats - probably not like a couple people mentioned ... names like Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Shore, Richard, etc. But out of "respected" players league wide (hell even internationally wide) ... he is definitely within the Top 2.

I also agree that he's one of the greatest leaders in hockey ... of all time.

stevie y was great, but top 10, i dont think so. off the top of my head, wayne gretzky, mario lemieux, rocket richard, mike bossy, gordie howe, bobby orr, jean beliveau, ray bourque, henri richard, and marcel dionne would all have to be ahead of steve yzerman on the all-time list, and i didnt even mention goalies (plante, roy for example) and im sure i missed some legends i shoudlnt have.

Maybe not in the top 10, but close. But I think you could easily make the argument that he is the greatest leader/captain in NHL history (rivaled only by Messier).

Of course he is. Look at his stats and the number of Stanley Cups he won. You can't tell me that he isn't one of the top ten best NHL players to ever live.
