In formal writing they are best avoided but if you are going to use them make sure you know how.An apostrophe replaces lost letters so cannot becomes can't have not becomes have n't I will becomes I'll. The one many people have difficulty with is 'you are' becoming you're...lots still use your.
I don't think many people will pick you up on it but it would be best to steer clear of these short forms in say a letter for a job interview.

These are all okay to use when speaking, but if you wanted to emphasise a certain point I't usually better to use the long form.
When writing a story, it's good to use a mix of contractions and the longer form, it just depends on the rhythm you want to create. If you wanted to say three things were't true, for example, you could say it isn't, it's not and it most certainly is not.

Contractions are used in informal writing, e.g cards and notes to friends and relatives, on internet messages and also in everyday conversations. Formal, full forms should be used in job applications, letters to businesses and all other 'official' communications.

Only for informal writings like on Yahoo Answers! For exams, essays and anything like that you should always write out the longer form.

Hi.
I use the correct manner of English grammar all the time, or try to.
So I haven't got a clue as to what's going on, other than it's they way it's pronounced.
Bob.
