The last few weeks my PC has been acting funny. I get lag in places where I didn't used to, and my newest game runs boggy and takes forever anytime it has to load anything big. It's not just games though, I have seem some bogdown with internet browsing, music, pretty much everything.

No major changes during this time. All drivers and software up to date. Defragged, virus scanned, ran a chkdsk, ran spybot, ran hijack this, deleted my cookies, moved my hard drives so they are on seperate ide controllers, and begged MicroShaft to let me die peacfully.

I am running the following hardware:

AMD 2800+
Asus A7N8X-E deluxe mobo
1 gig kit of dual channel DDR (Corsair)
2 80 gig EIDE hard drives @ 7200 rpm
ATI x1600 pro (AGP)
Soundblaster Live (ancient tech, I know)
paired optical drives (CDr/w, DVD r)

Get your hands on a spare hard drive and load a fresh copy of Windows. Only install what you need to get the system up to speed and test for the symptoms you have on your old drive. If they're still there, then you've got a hardware issue. If not, then of course you can be sure it's a Windows infection/corruption of some sort.

"Sometimes the easiest solutions are not obvious"

In the future, back up regularly. Use a program like Acronis TrueImage or Norton's Ghost that can perform incremental backups (detecting the changes since your last save). That way if anything rears its ugly head out at you, you can pick a date to restore from. Windows System Restore just doesn't cut it, as the programs and personal files on your drive are not saved.

As one person suggested, formatting and reinstalling windows can do wonders. I format and reinstall once a year (little extreme), But it does increase speeds back to the way it was when new.

youve done the basics - only thing it might be is too many progs running all the time.

or too many progs @ startup -

Goto Start-Run-type msconfig - then select the Startup tab - everything with a checkbox starts automatically everytime you boot the computer.

Only thing necessary is Microsoft's files/services and an anti-virus prog.

How long have you been running XP? Maybe you need to reinstall. I have met the same probs, and reinstalling XP works.
