Because one was so desperate for love that she slept with a teenage gardener, one was so desperate to be a good wife and mother that she took her child's ADD medication, one was so desperate for revenge that she burned down her enemie's house (on accident), one was so desperate to be perfect that she drove her husband to leave her, one is so desperate for attention that she constantly wears clothes that should be worn by people half her age, one was so deserate to keep her secret that she killed a woman, etc.
They are not as desperate as they used to be but they can't exactly change the name of the show!

My guess is because they are housewives, cooped up in a house, doing house wife things, and are turning desperate for some drama and attention.
