I think it's a great question. Economies are the life blood of any civilized Nation. Who wants to give up or sacrifice? To be inconvenienced in any way? Certainly there's a new breed of economists being born and are geared towards environmental issues, but a young fld. You'd think we could manage our resources more effectively.

It does not remain unquestioned. There is already a branch of economics called " enviromental economics" that addresses this issue. Also a lot of areas of public policy economics integrates enviromental pollution and cost to consumers etc and tries to come up with effecient solutions.

Because it goes into the welfare of human race, which is presumably also the goal when people tackle global warming. What exactly do we accomplish if we reduce greenhouse gasses but starve half of humanity? No human endeavor (including the battle for the environment) can be accomplished if we do not first tackle the question, how can we afford to do it.
