no i dont. marriage is two fold. there is marriage before god, where you promise yourself to each other and all that.... that isnt considered legal marriage though unless you get a marriage liscense from the courts...which is stupid. i have been with my guy for 4 years and have a 5 month old son with him. why do we need a piece of paper saying we can be together when we know we are together and love each other?

Look, if r gonna be a "social animal", its a most. There are and were people called 'asocial' who don't think that 'marriage' is necessary. It was the case that marriage was called a social affair rather than a private. But things these days have been changed, particularly after the second world war. Its a post modern world and here things are different. Have you heard people like "jazz singers" and of "lost generation"? . It just depends upon you. So far as childbirth is concerned, you can adopt one or have one 'cloned'.

No, but it is for the kids of that couple and it sure simplifies the financial and tax aspects of life together.
Marriage is a legal contract. It creates a "family" with all the attendant advantages and disadvantages. It provides a sense of security for children and it is the socially responsible thing to do.
But, essential? No.

I don't think it's "essential". I do feel that it makes a couple's life much easier in many practical respects. But it is not an essential part of a healthy relationship, by any means.

not really even though i 've been married for ten years,
but my sister has been with her boyfriend for almost the same time and they don't feel the necessity to get married and up until now they have not felt discriminated by anyone. they feel that if they do get married they will then have to be commited to a paper because actually, that's all it is a simple paper signed by two individuals that promise to love each other until the day they die, which they already did (without such paper)

I think that if two people really love each other, it would be an honor to consummate that by getting married.
