ok, i bought a down coat that is machine washable. so i just washed it and dried it, and now it smells like a wet dog. which obviously grosses me out, and i can't wear it smelling like that. does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to fix it, or prevent the problem in the future (other than dry cleaning it, which would actually cost more than i paid for the jacket- it was on a huge sale)?

use a front loading machine when possible use a mild soap like Ivory or you can buy soap made for down coats at your local outdoor clothing store. Do not let your coat sit out without being completely dried, use at least 3 tennis balls in the drier if you can until all the down is dried and not clumpy, it takes about one to one and a half hours to dry completely use a low heat setting on your dryer like the delicate cycle. Odor should go away when completely dried. I to have that problem I just make sure that the coat is dried completely. Good Luck with your coat

do NOT have it dry cleaned. if it smells bad, i'd suggest washing it again. natural feathers have a coating on them that's water resistant. so wash it again with plenty of good smelling laundry detergent. then dry it on low or medium in your dryer for several hours. keep checking on it, and try to redistribute the feathers from time to time, getting out the clumps. it's going to take a long time to dry, but it will be worth it.

Nope, that's what it smells like when it's wet. All you can do is let it dry and air it out.

i doubt that the feathers are all dry yet, spray it with some febreeze and toss back in the dryer for a while.
