It depends, but it could certainly be a possibility.

The factors would be the bank of issue, amount of principle, the lengh of time to maturity, and how long you have owned the CD.

The early withdrawl fee is the amount of intrest earned for three months at most banks so it could up to that point take away from the principal, yes. Call and ask them.

Yes. If the penalty is 3 mos. interest and you have only had the CD for 2 mos., it will cost you part of your original deposit.

This would not happen often.
