Hey hon,
I'm from County Wexford, Ireland. I don't know too much about the dollar but I have loads of pennies. They are huge. I saw your little dimes when in new York and San Diego. You could lose them in seconds. Pennies are a work of Art. In Ireland we had Harps on one side and pigs on the other or prior to 1922 when we became a free state the Queen's Head - Victoria that is and each reigning dignitary prior to her. My husband and I are collectors. Why are they bigger. The copper was weighted and the worth was determined by the weight and hence it's use as barter and trade. The auld dime is shite.(forgive my vulgar culchie country ways).

Oh my gosh, YES! I hate that they just randomly decided that the dime, which is worth more than the nickel and penny, would be smaller. Do you know how confusing it is to teach K-1 students learning the values and how to count coins?! Ahh! I do! I'm a teacher. Also, most other countries in the world have a logical order for sizing and quantifying their coins. They also have bills that are different colored so that there's no way you might actually give away the wrong valued bill. We're just now getting to that.

the amount to make a penny (which i think used to be steel, and copper plated - i could easily be wrong, i'm not expert) was worth less than the amount of silver to make a dime (they used to be made of silver)

Good question. Did you ever notice that the faces on all of the coins point to the left except the face on the penny?

No idea, lol. Probably one of the devious plans from the U.S. treasury to throw curveballs at its unsuspecting citizens ;)
