I want to buy a computer and need to know, If the (Socket AM2) AMD Athlon™64 X2 3800+ Dual-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology processor has 2.0 ghz does it double because its dual-core i asked because i saw this one (Socket AM2) AMD Athlon™64 3800+ CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology and this one has 2.4 ghz... to make it simple i just want to know will the ghz double because of the dual core processor.

As many has said, it will not double the speed. It can, however, increase the speed according to what you do. Programs that can use multiple cpus will increase in speed. Most games will not unless you run windows on one cpu and the game assigned to the 2nd cpu. That increases the speed a little bit (maybe 10% more or less). This applies to all cpus no matter the maker.

(Socket AM2) AMD Athlon™64 X2 3800+ :
Frequency / L2 Cache: 2.0GHz w/ 512KB L2 cache-per-core (1MB total L2)
Will the ghz double because of the dual core processor? Nope, it's good to have, X2 that is, if you are doing two things at once. Running two programs at the same time will not be clunky. I personally find it useful when watching tv on the computer and looking at an internet tv guide at the same time.

x2 3800 is better than the 3800. It will be better to get the X2 which is dual core vs the 3800 which is not dual core. Reason is that eventually games and applications will be made for the dual core to use it at its fullest potential. Like cassette tapes and cd. The dual core will win out. FYI, quad cores are coming out now or soon. Go to pcworld.com and it will explain. I can say yes, but then takes to long to explain why. But system speed is whatever the cpu is clocked at. So if it is 2.4, it is 2.4 period, dual core or not. Besides, get the AMD dual core with at least 2.8 GHz

first i think athlon 64 x2 has the bases on AM2 (am2 is the best socket)and 3800 means it have 2 core that each one is 1900 GHZ .

"does it double because its dual-core"
No. Both cores run at the specified CPU speed.
Comparing raw speeds is a bad idea when comparing different types of CPUs. Dual cores are significantly better than single core processors, despite running at lower speeds.
If you want a better idea, spend some time on Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/ ) and other hardware sites and look for CPU benchmarks. They'll give you a better idea.

No it doesn't. Dual Core means that it basically has 2 processing "brains", instead of one. It is almost like having dual processors, but not quite as powerfull since other parts of the processor is shared in a Dual Core.

The number of processors (core duo, core quad) has no effect on the processor speed. Having two CPUs doesn't double the speed. The speed is determined by the system clock.

No!! No This will not double the speed! no 2+2 = 4Ghz! the actual speed you will get only 2Ghz or 2.4 what u say. It just the speed of core each core running at the speed of 2Ghz but at execution time the both will take instructions of same application and execute it. it not means they double up the total speed. They will work simultaneously at same speed. U can take it as two bridges to pass on traffic, that allows more traffic against one bridge but the traffic speed will remain same at both condition.

No, just because you (in essence) have two processors, doesn't mean they are going to double the speed of each other.
