There is no single English accent there are dozens if not hundreds of different ones. There is no single American accent There are four major accents and many minor ones. Canada has different accents on the east and west coasts. Australia, New Zealand and South Africa all have their own accents and these are dividing further within those countries.

Accents develop through separation and isolation as well as mixing when people with different accents are brought together. No accent is better or worse than any other and they help identify you.

Thru the years we lost the accent , which is simply short vowels. We changed the words as we see fit. We do not speak english nor do the europeans or brits call it english, we speak american, and we are american. I know because i lived in europe for 10 years. I like the way we sound, It makes us stand out as americans, i would not want to be confused with a brit, i am a proud american, some of my ancestors were on the mayflower and this is my country.
