I recommend a lap desk that elevates your laptop off the table or floor, which increases airflow under your laptop. I spent $15 for a lap desk made by Targus. If this doesn't help, you can buy a cooling pad, but I don't think these work. Computer web sites have been trying for years to scientifically prove that these cooling pads actually work.

First, I would purchase a can of "office air", or air in a can. Make sure the computer is off, and blow out all the dust by HOLDING THE CAN UPRIGHT and blowing the air into the exhaust fants on the side or back of the computer. I emphasize holding the can upright because discharging the liquid into the internals of the computer can cause damage to the electronics. Not to mention the liquid is flammable and can cause frostbite if it comes in contact with skin. This should reduce the heat that your CPU generates as it can vent out the hot air easier.
I would personally choose a vented platform though.

A freezer.
I don't even use a cooling pad or anything, I say screw them all, I bought a lap top to put it on my lap, not son a desk (desktop ring a bell?), or on a cooling pad. I just split my legs in such a way that the vent fans can breath.

My wife's computer is a very HOT core duo. I bought her a chill pad with fans and it is very efficient. You could cook on the keypad until I installed it and now it is very cool.
