Uninstalling games and programs will typically give you more hard drive space, but not memory.
But, there are many small programs that run in the background. If you can locate these programs and uninstall them, then you will free up memory. For example, Quicktime and Acrobat run in the backgrounds. Spyware programs run in the background.
If you are trying to free up more than 5GB of hard drive space or 500MB of RAM, then you are better off upgrading. Adding a 2nd hard drive is inexpensive and easy. If you have only 512MB RAM, then upgrade to at least 1GB. 1GB is optimal for most people in WinXP. For gamers, 2GB is the sweet spot.

You need to remove running programs. To do this click on start, run, type in msconfig and hit ok. Click on the startup tab. Go through the list of programs, and uncheck any that you do not want to run at startup. BE CAREFUL, only remove programs that you recognize, ie: Quicktime, Adobe, etc.

It won't give you back your memory, because having a program installed doesn't use any memory unless it's running.
However, it will give you back your disc space. Both are meaured in megabytes, but are completely different things.
