Green eyes for example...in order for an infant to have green eyes, either the mother or the father would have to have "green eyes" written into a dominant gene. In reality...all an infants genes come from its parents. What genes the child inherits simply depends on whos genes are dominant and whos genes are recessive.

i'm not too sure if you could simplify children's genetic make-up as you stated in your question. i don't think it is that simple that mothers contribute the genes for hair, whereas fathers for something else, for example, eyes. ok, fathers carry the x or y chromosomes that would determine the sex of the child, but that does not mean mother's gene is missing from that component. mother's gene for child's sex mix with fathers, making up xx for girls or xy for boys. for hair example that you posted, as another case, it's not like the genes for child's hair is all from the mothers. there is definitely a mixture from the father's as well. now, how come then a child have brown hair when mom's is brown haired and dad's blond? well, then we come to terms with dominant and recessive genes. genes for brown hair is the dominant one. so, even with a mixture of genes for hair from father and mother, mother's will be expressed physically, since hers is dominant. hope that answer your question.
