They are considered to be Americans if they become citizens of America. This is absolutely the truth with anyone becoming a citizen of the United States, regardless of his or her place of origin. Now it is also true that the South African may consider himself an American with Dutch roots, or as an American from South Africa. But that's his or her choice.

Yes, the term African American has come to be known as a term for people of color. But white South African people also have the same African backgrounds. It is much like people are considered to be Asian Americans whether they are from China, Japan, or any other Asian country.

South African American -- lol
This designation would be reserved for the white south Africans and a black south African would be simply African American. How's that. Just as irritating as all the other labels.

I think they should be, as well as Moroccans and other Africans who aren't "black".
However, my understanding is that you may only be designated African-American if you are certain that you are a decedent of slaves from Africa. This is what I heard around Academia when I was working in a University.
So, if you are black and recently immigrated from Africa, you are, according to the new Academic speak, not African-American, but simply, American.

Actually, African - American refers to people who were indigenous to Africa, ie, "black." The "white" people that moved to Africa are of European descent, usually referred to as South Africans.
The topic is interesting but easy for me to say as i'm "white" aka. caucasian - but i'm also German decent. i prefer plain old American. I don't know why people have to label themselves.
However, i did read an artical that says - The label "African-American" is not universally used by blacks today, as evinced by companies and groups such as Black Entertainment Television, the Congressional Black Caucus, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, better known as the NAACP.
A search of more than 200 U.S. newspapers geared predominantly toward blacks finds at least 16 have the word "black" in the title, while only five have "African-American."

Technically, they are African, since they are from Africa, but they are still white/Caucasian by race, because their ancestry is European and not African.
