I would not go with canister or HOB filters for SW. Canisters especially can become nitrAte factorys very easily and quickly. Live rock(50+lbs), live sand(substrate), and a good skimmer is your best bet for a 46g. Also a powerhead for extra circulation.

I also had a 46 gallon tank, and the filter that was highly recommended to me was the Magnum 350 canister filter. It seemed to do the job just fine. Kinda pricey, but worked good for the 46 gallon tank. Just don't forget to do your water changes. I'd recommend changing 1/3 to 1/2 of the water every week.

Go to your local pet store and get a few books on starting up an aquarium. That's what I did, and learned a lot off of just two books.

Eheim canister filters are the best, but any canister filter will work great. Whatever you do, make sure you use filtration at least double what you would for freshwater. Also you will need a protein skimmer to make things a little easier.

canister filter and a protein skimmer for your mechanical
Live rock..add snails
get a hearty fish to cycle your tank in the beginning(damsels are pretty good) If you know someone with an established tank..get some bio balls from them or a small piece of rock to get your tank to cycle faster.(hearty fish at the same time)Let your canister filter run for at least a week before adding fish.(they sometimes retain a metallic resin that will hurt your live anything.)
good luck
