whenever you turn on the car and you hear a constant loud knock in the engine that is your sign you have thrown a rod. When there is no oil all you have is metal v.s. metal and when they collideit creates friction, therefore similar to someone having arthritis (it hurts!) That is what your car is feeling, but on a larger scale it will be stuck and that is it...time for a new engine.

Chances are it won't run if it threw the rod. When it throws a rod its catastrophic. To leak oil when it throws a rod it has to crack the block. That's not very common in street motors.

If you think it's a rod you probably spun a bearing. The engine will still run but it makes a helluva noise. I can't explain the oil leakage with this though.

By the hole on the side of the block! Seriously! If you suspect its that severe you should take it to your local mechanic.
