Short of having it tested for mineral content, you have to look for symptoms. Do you use a lot of soap before you see suds? Do you find undissolved soap powder in the washer or on your clothing? Do you get a white film on glasses in the dishwasher? Do you get a whitish deposit in pans or tea kettles, looks like white fur, after you boil water? Does a bath leave you with itchy skin, or dry skin? If a glass of water stands overnight, do you find a layer of white or reddish gunk in the bottom the next morning? Those are all symptoms of hard water. If you have public water, the water company will have had an analysis done within the past year, and it's a matter of record you can ask to see. If you have well water, you will have to pay for analysis yourself.
