Fish have gills which are specialized for breathing in water. When a fish is exposed to air, it's gills can't handle it the way our lungs can. Thus they drown in air and we drown in water.
As for sharks, they need to swim to make water, which usually has dissolved oxygen in it pass through their gills and facilitate gas exchange. If you stop the shark from swimming in still water, the shark won't get enough oxygen and drown!

Most species of shark require forward motion in order for the water to pass over their gills. Sharks caught in nets drown as do they in the scenario you described.

A fish out of water, is a fish out of its element. A fish comes fully equipped with a pair of gills, which it uses to breathe under water. The gills extract life-sustaining oxygen from the hydrogen in the water molecules, in order to regulate the amount of oxygen intake. This maintains the necessary balance of the two components of water for the fish to survive.
When a fish is taken out of water, and exposed only to air, not to oxygen and hydrogen containing water, its gills are unable to control the oxygen intake, the delicate balance cannot be maintained, and the gills inhale a lethal overdose of oxygen. The fish essentially experiences death by "drowning.

fish need air just like anything. they just have a way to get it out of the water. H2O. 2hydrogen molecules and 1 oxygen. if a shark stops swimming it dies. that's probably how they killed it. they just called it drowning cause they held it still in the water.

Sharks "breathe" by water passing through the gills..that is why they have to keep moving....(not counting the nurse shark)

hold a fish still and it will drown.....no moving water through the gills will kill most fish....sharks especially.....they move their entire lives
