it is on cdrom drive boot, so i see the ubuntu menu, then i click install ubuntu/use ubuntu then it goes to the ubuntu desktopand it says that gnome could not be installed.....waht am i doing wrong people. I am installling on a computer that already has windows, and i have also tried to install other linux distros but none install correctly, some just stop at the mdso prompt screen and it will just stay there and never change waht do i do!

yah yah im using the downloaded distro, but i ordered the actual cd from ubuntu do you think it will work better

I had the same problem.
I ended up getting the CD directly from Ubuntu rather than downloading the distro and had no problems afterwards. I don't know why GNOME wouldn't start for you, I used the KDE desktop instead. For me it was all an experiment to see if linux was worth the hassle, Ubuntu is the only distro that ever worked.
The lniks below I'm sure you've seen before, but check out the support link for answers or try using the kubuntu instead.

The live cd is different from the install cd, make sure that is what you are using if not get the install cd and try again. If the computer is from a manufacturer such as HP, Dell there is a good chance that it has an onboard video card, that used to be the source of a lot of troubles, I am not sure if it is still such a problem. If you think that it maybe try an add in video card.

In response... Just wanted to make sure you where using the proper version. I wondered when you said the installer you are using goes to the Ubuntu desktop, as installers dont have desktops, Live CD's do.
When you say that the screen freezes at the mdso (msdos) prompt screen, I believe what you are referring to is the first terminal that comes up while the linux kernel is booting...
I still say that happens usually from having an onboard video card. This means that the video card is built into the motherboard. If you can get an add-in card even a cheaper nvidia video card, I think it would help significantly.

I believe Mr as he has all of it SPOT ON, i take advantage of linux on 3-10 12 months previous laptops for acquaintances. the only reason you desire the previous motive force cd is that in case you want to spend 5 getting them from the disc fairly then the internet with SUPPER previous fashions have been each and every so often the on the spot card isn't recognized on setting up. Oh and take take into attention Terminal and command strains, those are the kit for working linux and is nice to appreciate for google difficulty taking photos. sure like Mr says you will love it. loads of great clone classes and originals that are in many situations better. Could be driver conflict of DVD or CDROM or Floppy drive. that the main reason behind this, the genome error is simple because it hasn't binaries on LIVE cd so it will install KDE. Use the latest OS of Linux 'coz they comes with lots of drivers. And u will never encounter this problem.
I recommend Redhat Fedora or Mandriva Linux or SuSe linux for u.
