We have a big population, we have the money to afford keeping people in prisons for long periods of time, we don't execute people very quickly.
China is known for killing people just a few days after the trial and then charging the family for the bullet.
Oh, and we have an underclass. There's a reason why most educated people don't go to prison...we don't commit the crimes because we have too much to lose.

I think, that we need to realize, that freedom doesn't entail the right to hurt someone else. No one, should be: murdered, molested, or hurt in anyother way.
But by and large, the population has increased, because of the American "War on Drugs"

Golly gee whiz, let me see if I can answer this question:
1 - We're a nation of laws,
2 - Laws have consequences for those who disobey them,
3 - LOTS of people are too dazed and confused to get #2, and
4 - Ergo, LOTS of people have to be housed away from the rest of us so that we normal folk can go about our lives free from burglary, armed robbery, hit-and-run, dope dealing on the corner, etc.

You are free to choose between good and bad. If you opt for bad....you wind up in jail. In other countries, they don't have enough prisons, so they just chop off their heads, or other body parts.

It wouldn't be the "Land of the Free" if we didn't lock up the law-breaking citizens who broke the "Law of the Land".

The "War on Drugs" puts millions of minor drug offenders behind bars. Also, prisions have been privatized and are big business.
