A bird's eye view is being able to see something from above. Like a view from a tall building.

It's a 'bird's eye-view'!

Come's from birds flying in sky and looking down for things to eat etc...

Means seeing something from above or to have a good clear picture of the surroundings.

In middle school art class I was told that a birds eye view was from above, looking down. Conversely, a worms eyes view was from below, looking up.

I think you mean the expression "bird's eye view" which means an overhead view or a wide view, i.e. "the big pictue".

Birds eyes are very small, so it means a small view of something.

Either of these two things

1) a top down view
2) a view in which you are able to see what you are trying to without difficulty
