Our grade school has had them for years, kids from kindergarten on up
have been checking out books and yes it does seem to encourage reading.

I would have loved them - I turned our family collection of books into a "library" when I was a little kid and, much to my parents' horror, pasted slips inside them all, and card pockets and labels with (my version of !) a category abbreviation on the spine - even the Bible. I was clearly a librarian in the making at 6, though never became one. Any "gimmick" might help. Try it. And the idea of Library Monitors etc is good. Even little ones take the job very seriously. Our local library is fantastic, all sorts of ideas to get the reluctant readers in - the real bookworms will read regardless.

All the schools my son has attended have done this. (we're military so he's been to 5 different schools) I don't know about the other kids but I know he always likes going to the library. But I also had him reading at 4 yrs old so I don't think the library cards are what did it for him.

Or some small reward for reading 10 books, like a book mark maybe. Just don't make it competitve - there's enough of that in school, and I always hated it. And I agree with boggle. My kids are only allowed video games or tv or anything but music, on weekends. During the week, you read!

It might! But a lot depends on the parents - if they are readers.
Everyone in our family reads except one grandson and he doesn't even like video games. But the one who does play them likes to read too.

that is an AWESOME idea! i remember when i was a kid getting a card was like a big deal. like my kids' voting registration card, and my kidprint ID card. i kept them in my little purse and watched over them like a hawk--they made me feel sooooooo important and grown up!

Not likely. Take their video games away instead. They might read for lack of anything else to do.
