I think it all depends on the student's reading level. However, always remember that everyone enjoys a good picture book from time to time! Also, remember that not every child will enjoy the same books because they have different interests.
Try Robert Munsch or Dr. Seuss for picture books that tend to repeat themselves and to name the two I can find on top of my head (right now). For chapter books (some may be reading at this level and always good for reading aloud), I would say Ramona books, Boxcar kids, mystery stories, etc.
Sorry I can not list more suggestions right now, but just think about the stories you enjoyed when you were young and start there! Good luck!

Younger elementary children (PK-1st) enjoy books with repetitive text, such as The Gingerbread Man or It looks Like Spilt Milk. Mid-elementary children (2nd- 3rd) enjoy mostly fiction books try the books written by Laura Numeroff and Cynthia Rylant. Upper elementary children enjoy autobiographies (of course at their level) and scary books by authors such as R.L.Stein. When in doubt, try Dr. Seuss or a book which has a movie/cartoon counterpart such as Charlotte's Web or the Mouse and the Motorcycle.

As other people have said, it depends entirely on their age. But for younger readers (1st through 3rd graded, say), Junie B. Jones and the Magic Tree House are great series. Flat Stanley is another good series, as is the Bailey School Kids series.
As they get a little older, there is a lot more variety and some really fantastic books. Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary, which I read when I was a kid, are still great, and lots of other classics - L.M. Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables), Road Dahl, Lewis Carroll, E. Nesbit, and much, much more. Some newer authors to check out: Eva Ibbotson (light, fun fantasy and ghost stories), Diana Wynne Jones (also fantasy, but more serious), Kate DiCamillo (Because of Winn Dixie and the Tale of Desperaux), Gail Carson Levine (fairy stories with a modern twist), Rick Riordan (two books so far into a great series that features Greek gods), and Blue Balliet (Chasing Vermeer - art and math, but it's fun, really!).
Some adult authors also have some great kids books - check out Neil Gaiman's Coraline (a spooky - but not too spooky - tale), Carl Hiaasen's Hoot and Flush (good boy stories) and Terry Pratchett's Wee Free Men series (comic fantasy).
Always, if you are stuck for something to read or recommend, visit the kids section of your local independent bookstore or library - there will be someone there who is dying to pass on some great recommendations!

My favorite author when I was little was Robert Munch www.robertmunsch.com My 6 y/o daughter likes him too. She also likes reading books where animals are the characters. For Christmas I gave her a few books based on Happy Feet and Strawberry Shortcake. If they have a favorite toy, see if there are books based on that toy. They will probably enjoy reading them more.

Oh my gosh! Try Sponge Bob Square Pants, Clifford the Big Red Dog, anything silly and simple...as long as you are reading it with them it's a joy.
