My natural gas furnace has been making a slight humming noise for the past few months or so, but it's been working just fine, so I didn't really pay much attention to it. But now it is getting really loud. Haven't opened it up or taken a look at it. Any ideas what might cause this or what it takes to fix?

It's just a weak Transformer. Shouldnt be a problem. Make sure the small low voltage wires arnt touching. The transformer is what takes the 120 volts and cuts it down to 24 volts that controls the thermostat.

Furnace Humming

If it is a constant hum then its probably the transformer. Its not getting weak its just getting loose from where its secured. If you can tighten the screws that secure it to the furnace that should do the trick. If that doesn't work sometimes if you take a little piece of rubber and place it between the metal frame and the bottom of the transformer that will fix it too. I ran into this a lot when I did HVAC. The transformer is sometimes located in the blower compartment and when the furnace is running there are lots of vibrations going on that can loosen screws. Good luck. Oh be sure to kill the power to the furnace before you go messing around in there.

Have a look at the blower or fan as you call it on the furnace and see if you can oil the shaft where it bolts down , it may be hanging up and making it difficult for the electric motor to start up properly thus making the humming noise. Oil around the belt pulley on the blower , there will be a belt running from it to the blower motor.

I think I'd have it checked may be as simple as a bearing going bad in the blower motor or an air leak in the ductwork. You can check that yourself. If when the furnace first kicks on it isn't making the noise but makes it when the blower comes on it's in that system.
Have a professional check it out just for your piece of mind.

the only humming or humming sound earlier the burner lights i can think of of is the flame igniter. You the two have a spark igniter or a warm plate igniter. A warm plate igniter operates on one hundred twenty volts and should no longer humm while energized. It the two works or fails, there's no in between. A spark igniter is distinctive because it works from a intense voltage merely as your vehicle's spark plugs. this may well be what you're listening to.

It could be several things.

Check to see if there is dirt build up in the fan blades.
Check to see if there is any loose insulation or if the filter is loose.
After the fan has run for awhile, check to see if it is warm. It may be the bearings.
One of the front panels may be loose.
If it has a belt driven motor, the belt may be worn out.

Good Luck!

I need more info such as when is this humming occuring(when it is running or off) if it is happening when it is off it is your transformer. Open panel and push on it and if the sound changes replace it, I have changed quite a few like this but they will run fine until it quites alltogether.
