What effects would a high and low alkalinity reading have on the fish in fish tanks? I need both effects of high and low alkalinity.

It depends on the fish. Some fish need high alkalinity to thrive, others need low alkalinity. But for the most part it does not matter. Almost any fish will adapt to any alkalinity within reason.

Was there a specific fish you were thinking about?

High alkalinity will stabilize the pH,usually at a high to moderate level.(Great for Rift Lake Cichlids and Livebearers.) Low alkalinity will create conditions in which the pH will drop as the water gets old. High alkalinity can be a problem if you are trying to keep Amazon or other low pH loving fishes. It's very difficult to change the pH. It will go down for a few days, then creep up again. If you have really stable pH,get fish that thrive in this water and enjoy easy fish keeping. PeeTee

Well this depends on what you mean by high and low. Typically most fish available in the US are farm raised and aren't in water that has the same pH as their native waters. So they can often withstand pH that is out of the normal range.
