I am 50 years old, worked for an ophthalmolgist for 10 years as an assistant. I have been out of the medical field for almost 20 years now. I looked up transcription schools on the net, however, i decided to go to college to get the associates degree. Unfortunately because I have been out of school so long, I have to take English, and yuck math. Are there any older people here who have taken the courses and how was it? And for those of you that are now certified, how do you go about drumming up doctors. A lot of doctors have "farmed out" their dictation, I would like to do this at home when I am finished. Suggestions please.. Thanks

Why not just get the Medical Assistant Certificarte. You have to take terminology, typing, physiology, Medical assistant classes and a couple of more, English I think but no math. Then you can do the transcription and it shouldn't take you as long. As long as you can do medical terminology and transcribe they are happy. I got it but I worked for a Dr. and didn't pursue the transcription but I could have, I just didn't do so well with typing, I liked the people part of my job. You may have to start with a hospital or a Dr. office or for a company maybe that does it for Dr.'s but then when you get out there ask what Dr.'s farm out the work. A lot of them have issues with records not being at a facility and the HIPPA laws are very strict these days. Good luck.
