On better clothes, the pockets should always be sewn shut when you buy them. This is to prevent the fabric where the pocket is sewn on from bagging or gaping, and to keep the line smooth. You're expected to cut the pockets open, but some people never do because they think it will look better

It's to make the clothes look even skinnier on the rack. If the pocket is any good, it should have some volume to it, which would make a little puff on the pocket. Apparently, the smaller something looks on a rack, the more likely someone is to purchase it. Therefore, if you take away that little puff, it looks smaller!

The final in good shape i offered grew to become into a similar way. Even the jacket vents have been sewed close. All it takes is a seam ripper and a pair seconds to repair. They did mine whilst i grew to become into having mine adapted.

It is supposed to be like that. Just snip the little thread that is holding the pockets shut.

I had the same question, and my mom told me was that its done so that during shipping, displaying, and trying on, the pockets won't rip from their seams.
