Most of them ask to go and have to be replaced. They don't want to work with a new congress/senate, made up of people who won't give them what they want (money, etc). So usually after an election (if the sitting president is still in office) you're going to see people come and go..some people get tired of public office.
12-18 hr days aren't for everyone, living in the DC fishbowl, where every move you make is on t.v, in the newapapers and gossiped about till the orginal story is 20 miles long and has changed along the way.
We elect a new president every 4 yrs...(which is also a leap yr and an Olympic yr....2008)
