Starters. The V-Rod is only one of the VRSC line. It was also the first of the VRSC models to be sold. They currently produce 4 different lines of bikes, Sportster, Dyna, Softtail, Touring and the VRSC. Each of these include several different models.
Due to increasing environmental concerns air cooled engines are soon to be a thing of the past. Air cooled engines are actually cooled with fuel also. This means they have to run richer then a liquid cooled engine. This makes them harder to pass environmental regulations.
Since the 1970's Porsche has been helping Harley Davidson (HD) develop their engines. This partnership is a great idea because Porsche has always developed the best air cooled engines. It was not until the V-Rod came to light, and Harley's became a yuppie status symbol the Porsche agreed to let their work with Harley be public knowledge. Porsche and HD began working on water cooled engines because of the environmental issues. Porsche took a beating from their followers when they discontinued the air cooled 911 series. HD decided to start a whole new line of bikes for the new water cooled engine, the VRSC. They went with a sleeker, more sport bike look, then the traditional Harley look they have maintained with all their other models.
What is different: (all other mean HD models)
Water cooled - all other bikes are air cooled
Radiator infront of engine - other bikes don't have this
Fuel tank under the seat - all other bikes usual tank location
Hydraulic clutch - all other bikes are cable clutches

in 07, i bought a used 06 with 4000 miles for $12000, but it was a street rod which does have a lower resale.... the economy has since tanked, so i'd guess it should be lower by now if people are desperate enough for a comparable deal.... buying an 07 or 08 now

water cooled , fuel tank under seat , what looks like two exhaust pipes is actually a single muffler designed to carry proper flow of exhaust gases , the frame parts are made by a water bending process that helps reduce the number of welds , the v rod is completly different than any other harley ever built but those are the majors .

Water cooled rather than air. . steeper fork rake and I believe what appears to be the fuel tank is actually an electrical compartment and the fuel may be stored in the frame or a tank under the seat..
