Actually, the proper editing tools to get your name or freind ID on a picture can be done with a simple program, and you've probably used it.
Guess what it is? It's MS PAINT (For mac users you might be able to do that with iPhoto)!
For the sake of being complete, and competing for best answer I am going to give you a detailed tutorial:
First you need to find out what your Freind ID is:
http://www.myspacetoolbox.com/myspace-friend-id.php
Once you've found it, then it's time for the fun part:
1) Open MS Paint.
2) go to file, and then open.
3) Select the file you wish to open in the Open File diologue box that comes up.
4) Choose the Text Tool and select where you want the text.
ALTERNATE: For if you have preprepared text that you wish to overlay. You will still need to follow steps 1-3 in the earlier one.
*4) Choose the "Select" tool.
*5) Then click on the icon that has no white stuff around the object.
*6) Either open the file that contains the text or copy and paste it into the document. Be sure to move the object around until you have it where you want it. In order for this to work properly, you will need to have the text alone with a white background prior to pasting it into the PAINT image.

Y' u can use it but it leaves white background behind names and id's :) that was ur problem no?
Here is one more program GIMP that will do this for u? its free also.
download it from here http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
its small but very powerfull utility program.
Do you have Adobe Flash that will also do this work.. One liner is "You must have one image manipulation program installed to do this work".
