I'm a producer looking for music to sample that hasnt been sampled, any old school or different artists that would be good to hear sampled? I'm trying to stay away from anything over 1980. Especially jazz artists,i heard about Ahmad Jamaal, but dont know any of his songs. Most or most creative sample gets my choice of best answer. nothing u heard sampled already,i want untouched stuff. Yes i mean before the 80's,i love the old sound of stuff,80's has top much fast drum beats and synths.

Well, it's pretty hard to name some samples if I don't know what kind of hip hop you're into (southern rap, East Coast, West Coast, old school, "boom bap," underground, etc.). I can only tell you what kinda stuff I like to hear (my hubby is a producer too and I help him look for samples all the time).

We get samples from all over the place - TV soundtracks, movie scores, video games (yes, video game soundtracks do exist), and lots of other kinds of music (jazz, classical, music from other countries, etc.). And yes, for the record, Ahmad Jamal definitely has some good stuff. He's been sampled by De La Soul (one of my favorite hip hop songs, "Stakes Is High"), Fat Joe, Jay-Z, Dilated Peoples, Pete Rock & CL Smooth and many others. So yeah, you might wanna check him out.

As for what other kind of samples you might like, all I can suggest is look up the genres you like and check out the top artists (places like Amazon and Rhapsody even suggest artists similar to the ones you previously looked at). And don't be afraid to check out artists you wouldn't normally ever listen to (just to make a point, we found some hot samples from songs by Burt Bacharach and Johnny Mathis of all people!). Other than that, it's pretty much trial and error. When they say "crate diggin'," they mean exactly that - diggin'. You almost have to treat the process like an archaeological dig - sometimes you won't find anything for a while and other times you'll come up with the find of the century. It all depends. But just use more popular artists to find rare/less popular artists and I'm sure you'll turn up something. Hey, works for us. :)

Oh - and as a bonus, I think you might like to check out this site we found called "Sampleur-Samplé." It's a French hip hop fan's blog that lists a crazy amount of songs (including the original artist's name, album cover and a clip of the sample itself) that have been sampled by hip hop artists (and a few others) over the years.
