First off, I would like to applaud you for sticking your neck out (risking yourself) to post this question. It is highly commendible and is an excellent display of intelligence.
That said, I wanted to be gross for a moment and add to Nextunuth's comments and stress the importance of nutrition and how eating a high number of daily servings of fruits/veggies and exercising will eliminate constipation, if that's at all an issue. Constipation leads to depression and a host of other illnesses, including acne. You need to "go" about 1 to 3 times per day instead of 2 to 3 times per week like the average Westerner. The remedies that I mentioned above will combat this horrible condition.
I, too, suffered from the "why am i so dumb?" for years since childhood. I was fed a load of nonsense by my own mother all throughout my growing up and kept throwing out indicators that I didn't fulfill her expectations as a scholar. She favored my brother (my only sibling) and never gave me the emotional support that I needed in those tender years. She constantly "played up" her intellect and never ceased to remind me that she saw herself as superior to me. She, also, never told me that I was pretty, which all daughters need to hear when they're young.
I say all these things because if someone close to you in your life is telling you, or even giving you the impression that they see you as unintelligent, then my advice would be to take the bull by the horns and steer clear of this person. If it's Mommy or Daddy doing as I've mentioned, then I would seek family therapy as these issues would be much more effectively brought up with a professional.
Too add, no one has these beliefs that they're "dumb" unless it's coming from an outside source. You had to have been told this by one or more people.
Sweetie, I am here to tell you that depression is such that needs careful attention. Do not take psych meds, you'll never come off of them. I've never heard of a doctor prescribing psych meds to a patient and taking them off of them after a period of time (if this is something that you've ever considered). You need to get to the root of the problem, but first, you need to nourish and exercise your mind and body for life long vitality. This is prescription #1. Take Nextunuth's suggestions to heart and add on from mine and the other sound suggestions on this thread and go with it to better health and a more productive, sound mind.
Update on my relationship with my mother: We no longer share one. Some time ago, for the sake of my sanity and my physical health, I chose to end my relationship with my mother. It was a very difficult decision to make, but was willing to cut the ties to live out the rest of my life peacefully. As a child, I like you, saw myself as "dumb", but also saw myself as inadequate, useless, ugly and a menace to society; and I figured all of this out as I matured and began to piece things together. I had decided that I would confront my mother, and after doing so, and seeing that she wasn't going to acknowledge, value and respond to my cries, then the decision would come to severing all ties with her. Once it came to this, and in going back to school, where I had failed classes as a child, I breezed through each college course with As. My confidence soared and I've never looked back.
My suggestion is to try to find out who/what is doing this to give you these feelings and then try to act on them with a professional. My case, as I said, was a very difficult one, indeed, and would not recommend taking these steps unless extremely necessary. You don't want to go through life feeling inadequate. This is a killer to the human spirit. Take action and good luck in all of your endevours, Sweetie, I'll be praying for you.
Peace...

You are not dumb!! You have to have some faith in yourself and think positive. If you are a partier, quit partying. If you go out with your friends or tend to do extracurricular activities, besides school stuff, start getting it together and studying more..HOpe this helps.

Another think I would like to add, I noticed someone kind of hit on the spot, is everyone learns at different speeds. Myself, I went back to school and I am only taking a couple of classes, as if I were to be in school all day, I would never make the grades I am settting my goals for..You may just have to take it slower than say someone else. I also don't think as fast as some people, as I don't have comebacks very often, because of this. LOL, hope you liked that...

You’re not dumb... Reading helps cognitive development... So go find some good books, novels rather. Writing does just as much as reading does.

Sleep helps the mind rest. Get on a healthy sleeping schedule.

Fish, peanuts any type of protein will do it. Go to Wal- Mart and purchase some fish oil tablets. You'll feel more alert and your memory will replenish.

And don’t be afraid to think. Question ideas and concepts, and come up with your own. It’s called Critical Thinking. Another key in brain development.

Stress stops the white part of your brain from working . The fight flight hormone kicks in and says let's run away and forget about thinking . So lower stress.
Also any person has to get good nutrition . If you are deficient in B vitimins your brain is going to barely work. In particular niacin. Don't take too much niacin the flushing is UNCOMFORTABLE> cut it in half . You need B's and C .
Also you need to realise that when you are thinking negative thoughts the brain will accept that as real even if its not and you become depressed as a result.Low energy people are depressed and their thinking slows down . BE positive about life especially how you think . So to be smart you have to give up that negatove opinion of yourself. It's not that you are dumb its that there are a raft of very competitive and advantaged people out there and you noticed it. Just the fact that you know your relative position means you are not dumb. Truely dumb people think everybody is like themselves!
You might be a beginner! Listen the more you learn the easier it gets.
Some people are intelligent in special ways like my son whose a genius car mechanic. You might spend a few hundred dollars and get some vocational apptitude tests done so you can match yourself with the right occupation. You know what dumb is? Takeing out 30 grand in student loans right before a depression at 18% intrest! save the money -my advice. College is not for everyone. In fact it's getting irrelevant. Intelligence really is knowing what is important to you. What do you want to do every day? What do you like to do?
But just realise that your brain needsEFA's - Essential fatty Acids ( walnuts, oily fishes ,flax oils). I also needs normal blood sugar. Don't elevate the blood sugar before sleep. You need sleep to make growth hormones and they shut off if you eat high GI foods before sleep.
I eat red star flake yeast and that sharpens my mind. coffee in moderation . Avoid drugs like the plague. Pot is the worst- kills brain cells , and after that lead and car exhaust. Lead is a big factor. Get chelated if you've somehow gotten lead inside you. Car exhaust is bad and copper pipes ,soldering, busses, all that ... leaky furnaces. All damages the brain . But you can get the lead out with chelation if tests show you have it. A lead line is a white line on the gum line as a symtom of lead poisoning. Bleeding gums headache
Breast fed babies are in the top percentiles. FYI. Human milk has more lipids . Lipids make brain cells .
Eat nutritious and do meditation to keep stress low. Cortisol kills brain cells.

I think it is a current global trend. I think Americans are getting dumber in certain fields like Math, Science and technology, while fields like banking, finance have remained unaffected. I studied Computer Engineering in a University in Nigeria for a couple of years before I came over to a US college, and my personal experience (and my grades) show that the coursework is clearly several levels easier over here in the U.S. Similar statements can be made when comparing coursework in India, China and Japan. On the other hand, there is a constant brain drain from all over the world to the US in the science and math fields as thousands of people migrate from countries like China and India to the US to start new lives each year, so I dont think the US will lose its technological edge for a couple of decades at least. In fact, take a stroll through the College of Engineering buildings of most colleges in the US and u will see a dominance of Asian students (When China gets their act completely together, its over=)

I can bet someone made you believe that you are dumb. You write better than a lot of people on this site so I have confidence that you are not dumb. Maybe poor study habits, maybe lack of concentration, or maybe believing that you are dumb has held you back.

Thre is something else getting in your way, not the lack of brainpower

You are not dumb you just have not found your nich in learning. There are other ways to apply what you need in education. Every day you are using what you are learning. Math you use it shopping, and paying bills. Reading, comprihension, in signage, books, key chains and science when you cook, the basics in daily life. Look at everything as a learning tool not just another day and school as an adventure. This I hope helps you!

You are not dumb!!!!! Don't say that! Some people just learn at a different pace, that's all. It's like a mile race............some may finish in 4 minutes, others may take 10 minutes............but the point is, they still finish.

you are not dumb. when I was in high school I barely passed but when I went to college it was a different situation and graduated with a solid " B " average. I took 2 courses in the fall and spring and 1 course in the Summer taking 1 Summer session off. I took advantage of tutors, the professors were fantastic and their attitude was " I have mine and am here to help you get yours. " ask them for help. see if they will let you tape record their lectures. learn to take good notes. remember the professors have " been there done that " and please be not afraid to talk with them no matter what other students say.

if you need help get it as soon as possible for the longer you wait the harder it will be to survive. take one hard course and take a couple of medium courses along with an easy course. suggest you talk with a school counselor as soon as possible. please do not hesitate as a good education is important. I worked hard, but it was worth it and I know you can do it.
